Fundraising Tips

We’ve all known people and families suddenly stricken with misfortune: a terminal diagnosis, a debilitating accident or a natural catastrophe. Because it’s human nature to want to help, there may come a time when you find yourself trying to organize a private benefit or fundraiser. And, if you’re like most of us, you’re doing it with very limited fundraising experience. However, there are some tried and true ways to generate interest, raise money and hopefully have some fun along the way.

Throw a Party!

Everybody enjoys a good party, although they do take planning, so look to outsource. Venues like University Park Golf Club make it easy, with planning staff and on-site catering. Don’t just invite friends – open it up to the rest of the community. You’ll be surprised how many people want to have some fun and support a good cause.
When pricing your event, consider whether you want to simply cover costs with the entry fee, keeping the price low to increase attendance. Then, you’d try to raise the bulk of the money during the event. The other way to do it is to charge more for admission, with a portion going to the cause.
There are benefits to each approach, although keep in mind that a larger crowd can really lift the spirits of the guest of honor, demonstrating the volume of support through the sheer size of the turnout.

Include a Silent Auction

One sure way to increase your fundraising is to include a silent auction. People and businesses are often willing to lend a hand to help within the community, and a silent auction can actually add to the atmosphere of your event. Well-displayed items help fill the entry area, and give people something extra to do at the beginning of the benefit.
If less expensive items are donated, consider combining them into themed baskets.

Games and Tournaments

Get your guests to pay to participate in games with a chance to win prizes.
One common idea is a board game tournament. Enlist teams of four people, each charged an entry fee for donations, to play a common game that most would be familiar with — like cards or Monopoly.

“A-thon” events

Another way to raise money is an “a-thon.” You know the type: any event that ends in “a-thon.” There’s walk, bike, swim, flip, etc. All great options to raise some money for great causes. For example, bike-a-thons and walk-a-thons are pretty similar; participants are either walking or biking. They’ll walk/bike a planned course and prior to the event, commit to raising money for the cause. They can collect pledges per mile, or ask for a set donation.

Golf fundraisers

Golf events are very popular, because they are a great to have some fun while also raising funds. Ask for local sponsors to help out with donations or perhaps sponsoring certain golf holes or greens. Scrambles are the most popular form of charity golf event, here are a few other ideas: golf tournament contests, like longest drive, closest to the pin, etc.; a charity auction at the golf course; selling golf merchandise; a golf tournament combined with a dinner banquet afterward.

Love, Laughter and EVERYTHING in Between: Day 3- Bow ties!

In general, it seems that there are two types of neckties; bow ties, and straight ties. Throughout the years, bow ties have become increasingly popular, with men and women using this trendy neckwear as a tool for self-expression.  Simplistic is great but don't be afraid of color and textures...I absolutely love this look; be sure check out my Pinterest page for other ideas.

WEDnesday Love: "Event Planning Tips - Part IV"

Strategies, Goals, Budgets, W's, (who, when, where)  Invitations....and everything in between.  What is there left to do?

The Walk Through
Visit the venue the day(s) before your event. Envision a few things.
  • How you want attendees to experience the event.
  • Which of their senses will be heightened?  I prefer to focus on all of them!
  • What signs need to be in place to avoid confusion?
  • Where should you station staff?
Basically, you want to understand what your guests will see from the time they walk into the venue from the registration table to the actual event. Touch matters! Sight Matters, Taste Matters. Hearing Matters.  Smell Matters.

The only way to anticipate how your event will feel is to walk through and see and feel what they'll see and feel.

After all of the hard work - be sure to ENJOY!!!

WEDnesday Love: Wedding Deals!

Planning a wedding or event of any size can become expensive and we all know dealing with the big B (budget) can add undue stress and suck most of the fun out of the planning process.  As a professional planner, I get joy out of finding deals and sharing them with my clients.

My friend and co-mom, Joyce, always finds terrific deals; so when I received this Groupon deal about weddings from she and my sister in law, I just had to share some of my favorite picks with my readers.

Many times wedding planning is geared towards the ladies; check out these that will also benefit the men in our lives ~ Enjoy!

Blue Nile Deal
Wedding jewelry is often passed down through a family due to its sentimental value and because only people who are related to each other have the same-sized necks and wrists. Start a new tradition with this Groupon.

Personalized Wine Labels
Personalized wine labels from PersonalWine.com. Choose from the following options:
  • $24.99 for 24 labels ($60 list price)
  • $37.99 for 48 labels ($120 list price)
  • $49.99 for 100 labels ($250 list price)
Wine labels measure 3.4" x 3.4"
Light up one of Gurkha’s quality cigars when relaxing with friends or pausing dramatically before delivering a one-liner to a defeated nemesis. Each sampler’s tobacco sticks range from mild to medium to full-bodied, and all arrive tucked safely inside an attractive suede roll holder.
Much like a well-tailored suit or a full-body tattoo resembling a well-tailored suit, a set of cuff links is the sign of a gentleman. These silver-plated shirt fasteners can be engraved with two initials, one for each cuff link, making them a thoughtful gift for a groom or groomsmen. The links are available in a round or square shape.

Calvin Klein Collection Ties
Known for his classic American aesthetic, designer Calvin Klein follows in his own footsteps with this collection of ties. Available in an array of colors and patterns, the ties are made in Italy from 100% silk.

Simply Shay: "Wedding Favors"

Seemingly a simply task; many couples stress over what to give their guests as a "thank you" for attending their wedding, eating their food and dancing to their music.  Many couples prefer to give the guests something edible rather than an expensive crystal ornament. Candy, sugared almonds, mints and truffles are always a pleasing favor to give.
The tradition of giving wedding favors can be found deed in ancient European history. The bride and groom gave small presents, or favors, to their guests and well-wishers to thank them for sharing the momentous occasion.  Often suger was given and because it was such a rare substance, the contents of the ‘bombonaiere’ were of great value.

A symbol of well wishing the wedding favor represents the five most important ingredients of a marriage bond: Wealth ~Health ~Happiness~Fertility and Long Life

The wedding favor is a symbol of love and respect from the bride and the groom, and a token of well wishing for their future together and can include such items as ribbons, candles, picture frames, personalized book marks, laminated plaques, candy, seed packets, pillows, balloons, potpourri, and more.

Simply Shay: "The Heat Is On"

Exclusively Weddings
Todays's blog post is dedicated to the heat!  I'm sure, like me, you've sat back and watched the many things that take place during a wedding ceremony.  How many of you have cringed at the site of the usher, wedding coordinator, cousin, photographer or anyone else with tissue in their purse (pocket) walking to the front of the church and passing either a box of kleenex down the attendants line or event worse.. handing it to the bride?

Tissue sticks to your face (really I'm laughing) and paper towel is not only rough but just tacky.  Instead of using these, how about we focus on some nice hankerchiefs?  Here are a few tasteful suggestions for dabbing sweat and wiping tears for the couple and their entire wedding party.... they also make great gifts.

Whether you decide on plain hankerchiefs or monogrammed; when you're standing at the front of the church and the heat is on, please dont use tissue :)

Your Career or Your Wedding

Everyone knows that planning an event of any size can be an overwhelming task when you don't have the TIME to dedicate to it.  Wedding professionals estimate that planning a wedding can take 250+ hours, therefore, life as a bride-to-be is overwhelming on steroids.  From flowers to what should you give out as favors depend on your nah or yah.  What am I saying?  Planning a wedding can be a full time job, and if you´re already a busy professional, guess what? Your work week doubled before you put the S on the Y.E (yes).  Now the question is how to balance your professional and personal life while keeping your sanity.

Organization
This is the best way to avoid headaches.  Having an appointment book is essential in organizing your work and personal life. Now you can see every appointment for the day, week or month.  Create a wedding checklist you can stick to  and use this same method for your work day.

Now & Later
Asking your boss to hold while you speak with your florist is probably a bad idea.  Instead, divide your day into time slots (as indicated in your planner) and have work slots and wedding slots.  Be firm with yourself and don't let one flow over into the other; this will do nothing but slow you down and add to your frustration.  Use your lunch and breaks wisely!  Consider arriving early or staying late so that productivity isn't jeopardized.

All Work No Play
So the statement of "work hard, play harder" is out the door for YOU!  Use that "play" time to knock off some things from your to-do-list.  Those times when you'd be relaxing on the couch catching up on your DVR - addressing save the dates can done without missing a beat.

Get Some Help
Delegate, delegate, delegate. Since you're sharing this moment with someone else, divide wedding planning tasks evenly between you and your fiance. After that, take it a step further by giving small tasks to immediate family members or bridal attendants (small – don´t turn friends into full time wedding planners, they'll resent you later).  Finally - consider hiring a professional.

Enjoy the process ~Peaceful Planning

Shall We Dance? ....NOT!

Reality TV shows like "So You Think You Can Dance" and "Dancing With The Stars" have couples believing they too shake a tail feather on their wedding day.  However, for many, the first dance at a wedding reception comes with a lot of anxiety.  Where some couples believe they are the next Fred and Ginger and welcome the spotlight, others are afraid of embarrassing themselves on the dance floor like Master P.

If you really want to dance like a rockstar at your wedding reception but terrified those two left feet of yours may get in the way; consider taking dance lessons, and practice your first dance until you are comfortable with it. Now, you may be like my one darling couple Apryl and Dwayne, who took it to the next level. They welcomed being the center of attention and their well  choreographed first dance proved it!!

Choreographed first dances are a big trend right now. Instead of simply gliding around the dance floor to a romantic song, newlyweds are working together (with or without a professional choreographer) to arrange some very interesting dance routines. Usually dramatic, and often funny, the idea is to shock the guests and make a big splash.... almost like a flash mob! (ha)

Before you run out and start working on the Never Say Never video, ask yourself will your grandmother think it is funny, or will she be mortified?  How will your father react to his little girl “shaking her moneymaker” on her wedding day? When you look back on your wedding in five or ten years, will you be amused or embarrassed? Remember, too, that just because YOU think you can dance doesn’t necessarily mean that you have the rhythm to actually pull off the moves!
