SimplyShay: Insurance, Who's Responsible?

You've planned your event down the finest of details.  Venue is in place, photographer, videographer, caterer, florist and even entertainment. Have you considered event insurance?  There are many reasons why your event may require insurance. In some cases, venues require you to produce proof of insurance before they allow you to load in for your event.

Event insurance aka liability insurance responds when the unthinkable occurs, when even your careful planning is not enough to prevent a catastrophic loss.

So who is responsible for obtaining coverage?  The venue? The client or the Vendor?  My vote is the vendor in most cases. As an event vendor, you place yourself or your company in a perilous situation if you are not protected against lawsuits or liability claims.

Weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and other private social events have a category of their own.  This category of event insurance protects the investment of the individuals who organize and pay for the celebration, in the event it must be canceled. Wedding insurance, for example, will cover the cost of the event should the death or illness of a family member cause the wedding to be canceled or postponed. The policy may also respond if one of your suppliers goes out of business prior to the big day.

One Sweet Competition

Chevy - Chicago - Cupcakes!!! Does it get any sweeter than this?  On Tuesday, September 13th,  I was joined by a few of my blogger friends for some friendly competition and sweet treats from five Chicago bakeries.

Chevrolet, who is celebrating 100yrs, provided us with vehicles for this oh so delicious Cupcake Quest.  Bloggers were divided into three teams and then we began the QUEST for CUPCAKES!   We were given instructions on how to score points and the team with the most points at the end of the Quest won a cool prize pack!

My teammate (Sidney Reid) of Hysterical Mom and Bloomin Heads was not only a hoot to work with but I think she enjoys cupcakes as much as I do!!!  At each stop we jumped from our vehicle ready to experience a cupcake party.  If you can imagine it, we tried it. We had mini cupcakes, regular cupcakes and even got my dog Pupcakes!  Every bakery had something unique to offer us and we didn't turn it down until finally we were like a pair of four (4) year olds with tummy aches.. hahaha

Here is a quick overview of each of the bakeries we visited.

  • Sugar Bliss Cake Boutique,  located at 115 N. Wabash was our first stop.  Red Velvet was our choice!  We met a nice lady that wanted to know why we were so excited.. duh, cupcakes!!! Owner, Teresa Ging she is the recipient of the Chicago Women Making History Award and Best New Business in 2010 from the City of Chicago Treasurer’s Office.

  • 50 E. Walton is where Sprinkles Cupcakes is located.  Upon arrival you feel as if you're standing in the foyer of your home.  Cinnamon Sugar and Strawberry were the flavors Sidney and I picked.  at this location we decided a random act of sweetness was in order.  A lady was paying for a cupcake for someone else so we decided to pay for hers.  She asked why and we explained all about CHEVY and she still was confused.  She finally said, "You want to buy me a cupcake because I'm cute?"  WELL ABSOLUTELY... hahaha  FYI:  Starting Friday German Chocolate and Almond Dark Chocolate... dont miss out on these!
  • Join Swirlz Cupcakes for their Customer Appreciation day on Saturday, September 24th.  Come out to 705 W. Belden for good music, friendly conversations and CUPCAKES!  Gluten Free, Vegan.. if you want it, they have it.  However, I have to admit the lemon cheesecake mini cupcake with graham crackers was incredible.  FUN FACT: While we were there they Swirlz was baking Pupcakes.. so, I purchased a few for my dog.  Coco enjoyed them so much she literally ran through the house like whewwwww... party over here!!! LOL

  • So we had one more bakery to visit and that was Sweet Mandy B's at 1208 West Webster.  What a cute boutique in the Lincoln Park area.  They even had a spot for kid parties!!!!!!! Dream Pops in for the form of cupcakes..Snickerdoodles. Where do I start?  Citysearch said it best, "If you think you can get out of the store without purchasing more delicious sweets than those which you intended, think again. It’s that good!"

Today was a great day!  Special thanks to every blogger that participated;
Chevrolet and Connie  for all their hard work, providing amazing vehicles and the team that assisted us.  The Bleeding Heart at 1916 W. Chicago Avenue, which is another amazing bakery, for the prize pack and reserving space for our end of Quest SWEET UP!

Congrats to Alicia and Paula on winning the Quest! They get to pick a Chevy vehicle and drive for ONE WEEK!!!!

In honor of this Quest and honoring the victims of  9-11 - tell us something SWEET you've done or will do.  We look forward to hearing your stories of "sweetness"

SimplyShay: Engagement Contest by Bows-N-Ties

Weddings are expensive. In fact, the average American wedding costs in excess of $26,000 - more than five times the average amount newlyweds spend on their honeymoon. To help take some of that financial burden off couples' shoulders, online tie retailer and wedding supplier Bows-n-Ties.com now offers couples a chance to win free ties for their entire wedding party. "All you need to do is send in your engagement story, and if yours is voted among the three most touching, most romantic, funniest, and/or extraordinary stories, then you can outfit your entire bridal party with free neckwear", explains Bows-n-Ties owner and founder Hendrik Pohl. For those guys that have not popped the question yet, maybe this contest will be the needed encouragement to take the next step.
Founded in 2009 by online entrepreneur and necktie aficionado, Hendrik Pohl, learned firsthand how stressful organizing and financing a wedding is after his sister recently got engaged. he thought that a wedding should be fun but not stressful, and/or cause financial hardship.
Since Bows-n-Ties opened doors two years ago they have helped thousands of couples find ties that match their wedding colors. "We want to make it easy for couples and eliminate one of the stresses of wedding planning by offering a huge selection of tie colors and styles at very reasonable prices", says Pohl. Bows-n-Ties contribute a large part of their success to their close attention to current wedding trends. "Each season we consult with industry leaders like David's Bridal and TheKnot.com for current color trends. We have a very good relationship with our suppliers which give us the flexibility and competitive advantage to produce matching color neckwear within a few weeks of first seeing a new color trend emerge", says Pohl.
Besides offering over 2,000 different ties and bowties in stock that are sorted into 19 easy-to-browse color categories, Bows-n-Ties.com takes pride in their flexible, no questions asked, return policy. In fact, as Pohl explains, "we encourage returns and exchanges. Finding an exact color match can be quite challenging - especially when you are matching a fabric you hold in your hand to a picture you see on a computer screen. We usually suggest to our customers to order a few different ties and then ship the non-matching ones back to us for a full refund."
To participate in this contest, Bows-n-Ties.com asks all those who are interested to submit their engagement story through the website's contact us page. All stories must be received on, or before September, 31st, 2011.

SimplyShay: "Candle Light"

One thing about me is I LOVE candlelight. I think we all agree the use of candles makes anything look GREAT. Romantic and stunning, it is the easiest way to add mystery to your event design. Most, if not all, of my events involve some type of lighting. However, following a wedding where the client was responsible for the damage created from flames I do NOT use real candles (unless in cylinder situations).

Now, when I use candles (a staple with Simply Perfect Peace & Designs by Shay) I am reminded of why I use "flameless" ones.
  • Voltives (safest to use) can burn the flowers or even worse.. the linen if not places properly.
  • Pillars, sleeves, tablecloths or anything else in the way.
  • Tall tapers (which are the worst) WILL have wax all over the place and just create a mess.
This might not seem as romantic but my preference (based on my experiences) is LED or battery operated candles. You'll get the same overall effect without the mess. Now if you insist on real candles go for it but now you know of some of the hazards.  Here's hoping for the best!

SimplyShay: "The Quest for Cupcakes"

Almost everyone I know loves a great cupcake.  Take that same group and over half of them are competitive.  I am happy to announce that myself (Sharon Patrice) along with Chevrolet will host a Chevy Cupcake Quest on Tuesday, September 13th.  The "Quest" includes local bloggers getting involved in some friendly competition and...... you guessed it CUPCAKES.  Some very special Chicago Bakeries are participating in the Quest, but for the sake of the competition, I will keep the names a secret.

If you aren't involved in the QUEST, dont fret because immediately following, more bloggers along with some very special event planners and industry professionals will meet for a Sweet Up and experience these delicious treats.

The cream cheese frosting on a Red Velvet cupcake just does something for me - what's your favorite?
