Motivational Monday: "Taking time for YOURSELF"

After a weekend filled with very little sleep, I was well on my way to a migraine when I came into work; today's Motivational Monday comes by way of a conversation with my co-workers - hope it motivates you as well. 

From a simple "how was your weekend?" we began to do a quick evaluation of our peaceful existence as women.  Mother's Day has come and gone and we are back to our routines of transporting kids, cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning and laundry, etc.  Just replaying my weekend in my mind is exhausting and a reminder that, often times, we as women fail to take care of ourselves.  Because we are nurtures we can easily find ourselves caring and tending to the needs of others and forgetting ourselves or at least putting us on the back burner.

How many times have you been angry and not sure why? How many times are you disappointed that someone didn't do something for you that you feel they should have?  When your partner doesn't see you taking care of yourself they can easily "assume" that it isn't important.

Motivational Monday: "Learning to Love Yourself"

Having self-respect, a positive self-image and accepting yourself as you are and coming to terms with those aspects of yourself that you cannot change are things generally said when told to "love yourself".

Needless to say, it does not mean being arrogant, conceited or thinking that you are better than anyone else. It means having a healthy regard for yourself knowing that you are a worthy human being.

It is important to remind ourselves that no one is perfect. We all have strengths and weaknesses and we certainly possess the resources to work on improving ourselves.

Motivational Monday: "Mirror Mirror on the Wall"

Mirror Mirror on the Wall............... What is BEAUTY after all?  When you look in the mirror what do you see?  I remember growing up, my parents always made me feel really pretty.  Then I had to leave my home and go to school were my dark skin wasn't so favorable.  I was called names such as "darky" "black" and the worst of them all "SKILLET". 

I remember asking myself, "why are kids so mean?"  More importantly, why did it matter so much what they thought of me?  One thing is for sure, I was thank for a home with other darkies that knew and appreciated what we acquired from our ancestors was beautiful!!!

Fast forward to my adult life and being dark NEVER phased me!  I relished in my dark skin and often times during the summer looked forward to it becoming even more chocolaty.  My brothers call me "black" as a term of endearment and I answer proudly because "My Black Is Beautiful". I love who I am and what I look like; from my naturally curly hair, big brown eyes, half of a dimple when I smile; my white teeth, lips, hips and thighs. Even though I work out to keep fit, know that -YES! I love my beautiful brown self through and through.

Not sure what's in my hair (insider with my sissy pooh) but I love this photo of me.  I was headed out on a nice sunny day and thought, "Hmmm, #lovemyselfie time!" As I look at the photo and reflect on my life I realize that I am by no means perfect, yet perfectly imperfect and love that and more about myself. 

You are strong when you know your weakness, you are beautiful when you appreciate your flaws, you are wise when you learn from your mistakes.

Motivational Monday: "No MakeUp Monday - Inner Beauty"

True beauty comes when you are find inner peace, solve problems and live a life that is harmonious with your surroundings. After you become a good person you will radiate attractive and healthy energy that will bring good people in your life.

Challenge:  Make a list of six qualities you like about yourself—half should be physical features—then rank them by what you deem the most appealing. Carry the list in your purse to remind yourself that you offer a full package of inner and outer beauty. Play up your favorite physical feature.

 

Question:  If you were an airbrushed version of yourself, would it really land you your dream job or guy?

Motivational Monday: "No Makeup Monday, HELLO World!"

Happy Monday World!!!!  This NO MAKE UP MONDAY started off  Simply Fantabulous with a workout, juicing and finally getting dressed to tackle the world.

Although my alarm went off at 6:15am,  I was truly awakened by the sun peeking through the curtains of my bedroom balcony.  How grateful am I to see another day and to feel my aching legs.  Let me tell you about these legs.. lol  Over the weekend, I started a new work out DVD with my friend Rasheeda Bibbs called Black Girls Workout Too and I am feeling the burn.... in a good way :) If you're looking for a good workout be sure to click the link below, we'd love for you to join us as on our fitness journey.

Following a wonderful workout I indulged in a juice with sweet potato, ginger, apple, carrot, celery, lemon and beets... talking about some kind of good.  If you need recipe ideas, check out my sister and friend Sandra Howse Dillard of HealthyHowse.

Motivational Monday: "No Makeup Monday - #LoveYourSelfie"

There’s nothing inherently wrong with makeup, but it sure is easy to get caught up in it.  To get tricked into thinking that we, as girls and women, have to wear it.  But that isn’t true!  Your bare face is beautiful!

Thanks to everyone that has supported the No Make Up Monday campaign thus far, has tweeted using the hashtag #loveyourselfie and felt beautiful even without mascara.  Society would have us to believe that natural beauty isn't beautiful, but I beg to differ. See you next Monday and be sure to share those beautiful photos with us.

Ok, so I'm a Chicago girl and sitting outside mid March is very unlikely. Motivational Monday: "No Makeup Monday - Workflow"



Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin.  For others, adding that pop of color to their lips or that extra shading to the cheeks is enough to arm them with enough confidence to get through the work day.

 

Elle editor in chief says that while makeup may give you confidence, it's best to avoid wearing makeup at your job for as long as possible.  In a 2011 study conducted by Harvard University, researchers found that women wearing more makeup were judged to be more competent and likable. So is that reason enough to hit the bathroom for regular makeup touch-ups throughout your work day?

Motivational Monday: "No Make Up Monday-Take the Challenge"

Daughter's in the Open is a NFP that my sister Karen and I organized some years ago.  The mission of  DITO is to encourage daughter's of all ages to walk through their doors of opportunity; build self-esteem and promote self love.  We have been very fortunate over the years to pour into the lives of many young girls that are now adults with their own families.

For many of us, wearing make up is part of our daily routine and the idea of going without can be an intimidating challenge.  DITO is challenging daughters every Monday to go about their lives, then take and post the untouched selfies without makeup.  The reason for the selfie is not to embarrass anyone but to understand that it’s not really about the makeup but about embracing our good attributes and recognizing what make us valuable.

I believe that if worn properly, makeup definitely enhances our natural beauty. My thought is even without makeup, we still do a good job, we still have the same values.

I'm asking that on every Monday we go without makeup, tweet or change our Facebook profile photo to one of their natural self, and participate in dialogue about healthy body image and inner beauty all year long.  Be sure to add the hashtag #loveyourselfie
