Chip in to an InCCRedible Cause! The WORLD of Cheerleading
Many know that I am a HUGE sports fan and from January - March it's all about CHEERLEADING! Yes, cheerleading is a sport my friends :) What is considered a sport? In a dictionary you may find the word "sport" defined as a "physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively."
The skills involved in Cheerleading leave no doubt that cheerleaders are exceptional athletes. To perform their activities, they must be as strong as any football player, as poised as any dancer and as flexible as the best gymnasts. They are athletes by every definition of the word.
The Women’s Sports Foundation has narrowed the field down of what is considered a sport to these elements that are commonly agreed upon to define a sport:
• It must be a physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space or overcoming the resistance of mass. (Stunting… check)!
• “Contesting” or competing against/with an opponent is required (Competition… check)!
• It must be governed by rules that explicitly define the time, space, and purpose of the contest and the conditions under which a winner is declared. (Time limit, mat size, score sheets… check, check, check)!
• Acknowledgement that the primary purpose of the competition is a comparison of the relative skills of the participants. (WORLD! You know those competitions on ESPN? Those are national championships… check)!
The Cheerleading Worlds is held every year at the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, FL. It is THE competition of any Level 5 Cheerleader's dream. In order to compete at Worlds, a team must first get a "bid" which is earned at specific competitions based on performance and placement.
