Soothing Saturday with Shay: CHEER Edition at the Marriott

This Soothing Saturday with Shay is dedicated to moms that sacrifice for their children and especially CHEER moms. The countless hours in the gym, not to mention the amount of money spent to have our children participate in this SPORT. Whether your kid cheers recreational, with their school, or on an all star team ...CHEER moms you ROCK!

You might be wondering how does "Soothing" and "Cheerleading" go together.  Well, if you're able to stay at one of the Marriott hotels then you'd understand it a little better.

One of my favorite moments of cheer season would have to be the hotel stays!  I'm a Marriott girl and absolutely love the comfy bed, work out room, whirlpool and no snoring that comes along with traveling with my all star cheerleader. Although our days typically start early and end late, the Marriott makes our stay stress free and enjoyable.  This past weekend we stayed at the Renaissance located at 1551 Thoreau Dr N in Schaumburg on the club level that included breakfast and a magnificent view.  Located near IKEA, Woodfield Mall and fine dining it was a nice little getaway close to home.  Speaking of fine dining, the hotel restaurant Sam & Harry's private dining features some of the best steaks and succulent seafood around!

With over 48,000 square feet of event space dripping in Swarovski crystal chandeliers and natural light, the Renaissance Schaumburg is also a great venue to consider if you're getting married in the not so near future.

What are some of your favorite hotel chains?

Fasting - A Few Tips (Day 5)

Part of planning your fast should be to educate yourself on different types of fasts and reasons to fast. It is also important to know how to break your fast properly. This becomes more critical the longer your fast lasts. Here are a FIVE tips that I hope will help you as they have me.

Be Conscious of your schedule
By human nature FASTING is inconvenient.  Be considerate of those in your household when you begin your fast.  It wouldn't be a good idea to ask your family to skip Christmas dinner due to your obligation and would take away the personal nature

No Caffeine
Several days before your fast begins, you should start weaning yourself off caffeine. Some people experience unbearable headaches 2 to 3 days after ceasing to drink caffeinated products. During your fast you will already be acutely aware of your stomach. There is no need to add a second discomfort if it can be avoided.

Pay attention to your emotions
You may find that one moment you are totally focused on God and the next wallowing in self pity. Knowing that this is likely to happen will help you react properly. Learning to refocus on God and His goodness during this tough emotional time will help when your fast is over and you experience similar emotions.

Get some rest
Laziness is a problem that the Bible speaks against, but most of us today suffer from being too busy and not getting the rest we need. If you disconnect from the media and other people you will have extra time allowing you to get a full night’s sleep. During your fast you will be forced to slow down since you won’t be needing long meal breaks. A fast will reveal to you that you have too many activities and busyness in your day-to-day routine

Study to be QUIET
You can't hear if you're always talking.  Fasting is a time to study God’s Word, meditate and pray. To help with this, plan a specific Bible passage or topic you want to study during your fast. Look for verses you want to memorize and meditate upon. Fasting by Jesus and the disciples was always accompanied by prayer. Spend time talking to God and allowing Him to reveal Himself to you in His Word.

Fasting - The Purpose (Day 4)

So by now we are clear on what fasting is, how it works, the benefits of fasting and just about how long we should commit to it.  Now let's get into the PURPOSE of fasting.  Like I've stated in previous posts we can fast as part of a diet or for spiritual reasons.  A good friend once said that without prayer, you're merely on a diet anyway.  If your sole purpose of fasting is to lose weight then may be only focused on what you don't eat and you're missing out on the revelation that awaits you when you implement prayer.

However, if you are fasting to lose weight the purpose is simple - to lose weight?  With losing weight you will gain a lot more energy and cut out any health issues that may have arisen due to bad eating habits.

For the Spiritual fast, ideally, we should spend most of the waking part of a fast period praying, studying and reflecting. The Bible has a great deal to say about both fasting and praying, including commands to fast and pray. The Bible also gives us examples of people who fasted and prayed, using different types of fasts for different reasons, all of which are very positive results. Jesus fasted and prayed. Jesus' disciples fasted and prayed after the Resurrection. Many of the Old Testament heroes and heroines of the faith fasted and prayed. The followers of John the Baptist fasted and prayed.  Many people in the early church fasted and prayed. What the Scriptures have taught us directly and by the examples of the saints is surely something we are to do.

In the society we live in, it's hard to comprehend that fasting is unpopular. People tend to think that every day they need three large meals plus snacks. In a culture of continual feasting, it seems there is no place for fasting! From that standpoint alone, fasting is good for character building—developing self-discipline, commitment, moderation and better eating habits.

"If my people who are called by my name would humble themselves and pray.........."
