Wedding Movitational Monday: Communication!

How many times have you heard "don't go to bed mad" and "be slow to anger"?  Yeah well, good luck with those two statements.  Now let me give my disclaimer -  I am not a professional counselor, psychologist, etc.  All views and opinions in this post are my own and are based solely on my life experiences.

Although I am no relationship expert I do consider myself an expert in love and romance.  One thing I do know is that where there is NO communication, please believe that love romance are soon to follow.

The "Lees"

If you're in a relationship, you know that conflict is virtually inevitable.  However, conflict isn’t a problem; how it’s handled can bring people together or tear them apart.  Poor communication can kill a good relationhp with disagreements and misunderstandings being a source of anger and distance.  Since we know that conflicts can occur, next time you’re dealing with it, keep these tips on effective communication skills in mind and you can create a more positive outcome.

  • Focus: If the discussion is about what happened TODAY; do not bring up what happened last year, last month, last week or even last night.  This does nothing but cloud the current issue with more garbage.. and making the following steps even more difficult.
  • Listen: If you're only silent until the other person pauses, you're not listening effectively! No interruption, no being defensive; hear and reflect will go a long way.
  • See Both Sides: Everyone wants to be heard and understood.  As much as you believe it; you're not always right!
  • Own Whats Yours:  Realize that personal responsibility is a strength, not a weakness.
  • Compromise: Look for resolve. It's not about winning or losing. Try to find a place where both partners can if nothing else, agree to disagree!
The "Olsons"

After it's all been said and done - we are going to disagree.  Marriage and relationships are work!! Be determined to live in PEACE!  Don't be a doormat but don't be so eager to argue and fight.  Good communication can resolve a lot of the surface issues we have in our relationships.

Wedding Wednesday: ZoyaModa Atelier!!

Recently I posted a question of the day on Facebook regarding wedding dresses and tattoos. Is it appropriate for the bride to show her tattoo while in her wedding dress?  Some people, especially guys though it to be less classy and should be covered up; while others felt the tattoos exemplified who the bride was and shouldn't be covered.  In my opinion, as a pro-tattooer, it's completely up to the couple and very important for the bride to feel comfortable on her day.  Another respondent offered a more professional opinion.... meet Zoya Nudelman

Like the collections she designs, Zoya Nudelman, the co-founder and chief designer of ZoyaModa Atelier, is graceful, sophisticated, and exquisite. Currently residing in Chicago, IL, Zoya was born in Kishinev, Moldova. She came to the US when she was younger with a dream; to one day make every woman look and feel like a Queen.

All of ZoyaModa Atelier Gowns are designed with bride’s great personality in mind. When Zoya works with her clients, she works closely with each Bride to develop a beautiful design that will start from a sketch and lead to a beautifully constructed gown.

Whether it is a large scale wedding, a smaller wedding in the park or at the beach, or even a nice restaurant style event, we have your special dress in mind and we will help you feel like the Special Bride you always wished you can be.

"Most of my Brides find great comfort and relaxing feelings about their wedding when we produce a beautiful Gown together that the Bride can transform herself all throughout the day. I call these dresses, Convertible Gowns." ~ Zoya Nudelman

No more waiting for 9 months for your dress to be ordered… No more receiving your dress in the wrong size… No more paying up to $1000 on your alterations and your train bustle… No more stress… With ZoyaModa, you are in good hands.

For new Designs and Promotions, Please feel free to visit their website at www.zoyamoda.com and Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/ZoyaModaAtelier.

Holiday Party Tips with SISTER SAVE A LOT!

Holiday parties are fun, but we all know they also can be expensive to host. This year, with the assistance of my friend Sister Save A Lot, here are a few tips on throwing a memorable bash without going broke in the process.

  • Create invitations that convey the theme of your party -- and that it's going to be really fun, a must-attend. Be sure to include a start and end time along with the style of party so people are appropriately dressed.

Sister Save a Lot Suggests: EVITES because they are FREE!! This is an informal event and no need to spend the extra money on formal invitations.
  • You must have fabulous decorations! To keep cost down make use of those Christmas decorations: String white lights around the front doorway, windows or the buffet table; stack same-color holiday ornaments in large glass bowls or vases; and hang colored globe ornaments from the ceiling with pins and fishing wire. Chargers are inexpensive and look magnificent on the table or even mantel.
Sister Save A Lot found a great find at Dollar Tree - don't sleep on the dollar store finds. You can have a fabulously decorated event and no one will ever know you spent under $10
  • Munch and mingle is the name of this game! Design a self-serve buffet full of finger foods. Then use vibrant, shiny, thick wrapping paper to line each serving tray or plate. Suddenly, all your platters and plates will match the mood. Salads go a long way- shrimp wrapped in bacon and pepper jack cheese is one of my favorites along with a crab and cheese mixture I do placed on english muffins. For that touch of sweet and salty I like pretzels with melted rollo's and M&M's. These are snacks that are easy to make and wont kill your budget. You may even have some of these left from the huge candy holiday back in October. :)
Sister Save A Lot Suggests: USE THOSE STORE COUPONS! Go to Sister Save A Lot's blog page and type in Jewel and you can get more info...
  • Speciality Cocktails will help you save big bucks and make a party memorable. I'm a martini girl and off the wall bartender so I love creating exciting drinks (non alcoholic too). However, I didn't create this one :) Start with 1 peppermint stick, crushed, 1 1/2 ounces vodka, 1 ounce peppermint schnapps, 1 ounce Triple Sec, Ice and 1 small candy cane... DELISH! If you have children there or non drinkers.. leave out the vodka - they'll be ok too.
Sister Save A Lot Suggests: Check your local store wine department for "wine tags". Several wine bottles and other items will have in-store coupons on them. Also, consider buying in bulk - you have easily save 10% buying 6 or more bottles of wine instead of one at a time.
To complete your holiday bash, be sure to have some music and even do a little singing. At the end of the night let your guests leave with a batch of cookies or a nice inexpensive novelty gift. Sister Save A Lot likes the idea of a picture frame. This way after you take your group photo you'll have something to put in in.

Have a tip you'd like to share? We'd love to hear it!

Small Business Saturday

Saturday, November 26, is the day dedicated to supporting small businesses.  Small Business Saturday happens on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.  Myself along with many of my friends are small business owners and as I listened to the success stories of Black Friday, it is my hope that Small Business Saturday will be just as successful.
Simply Perfect Peace Events and Designs By Shay are my two businesses where I work every day as Owner/Lead Planner and Operator/Designer. TODAY we're offering some pretty good savings.  Book your 1st quarter 2012 events with Simply Perfect Peace Events and save a substantial amount on our planning and design packages.  At Designs By Shay you'll only pay $10 design fee (normally $25) on photo holiday cards AND receive flat panel cards for $1 each with a minimun order of $25.00. (some restrictions apply)

What A Wonderful Week - Driving Denali Days #2-#5

If you've been on Facebook and Twitter then you've been following my advertures with the Acadia Denali. I must admit that it's been a fun ride and here are a few things I learned along the way.

Day #2 - "Baby It's Cold Outside"
Anyone that really knows me KNOWS that I am so over Chicago and cold weather.  First time it's under 40 degrees I'm ready to pull out the biggest coat I own.  Well, the ultra sexiness of Acadia Denali along with the climate control kept me from booking the first thing out of here to AZ or anywhere extremely warm.  It had gotten so warm at one point I opened the sunroof AND the 2nd row skylight.. #BOOMkatPOW

Day #3 - "Lights-Camera-Action"
Moooove, get out the way!  Im backing up well no thanks to the REAR VISION CAMERA SYSTEM this was watching television.  The lighting in this dynamic SUV made it real easy to put on my lip gloss at the stoplight too.. (smile) The inside reaview mirror with auto dimming made my co-pilot pretty happy too.  A cheerleader must be ready when she hits the practice floor!!

Day #4 - "Let Me Get That For You" & "Can't Touch This"
After the Denali was being scoped by her cousin the Chevy Equinox we headed to choir rehearsal where my dear brother pointed out that I did NOT have to get all the way to the car to start it.. WHAT????!!! YES indeed REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY..

Day #5 "Get Up, Get Out and Do Something"
Making moves Friday - life as a mother and planner keeps me GOING!  This Acadia Denali has a 3.6L SIDI V6 Engine with a 6-SPD Automatic Transmission which made hitting the eway real nice.  Duel exhaust with chrome tips let the other know to get out of our way.... Well, all that power and no direction, I got a little lost today.. ONSTAR to the rescue!! With a hit of a button the friendly voice had no problem guiding me to my destination.

~SPECIAL GIVEAWAY!!!~
Driving Denali has been indeed a stress LESS experience and to celebrate that Profound Touch Mobile Spa wants you to be stress LESS too.  They are giving $10 off a 30 minute massage!!! Visit their page and mention "Designs By Shay and GMC are making moves"  *other rules apply and determined by Cheryl Harris of Profound Touch Mobile Spa*

Wait.... after the massase you may want to do a little more pampering AND get glam'd up!
Rasheeda Bibbs (a fabulous natural hair stylist) is offering $10 off eyelashes!!! Visit HER page and mention "Designs by Shay and GMC are bringing sexy back" *contact Rasheeda directly for details*

~ Enjoy!!!

2012 Wedding Trends

The Wedding Salon swooped in on Monday leaving behind some amazing wedding trends for 2012.  The ultimate trend will be looking to nature and to local landscape for reception tables and Chicago's finest designers showcased just that!

Who would ever think of etching the dinner menu onto charger plates for the couple to keep post wedding?  Yanni Design Studio of course!
How about imcorporating origami accents onto wedding cakes?
Another amazingly unique new trend unveilved was cookie-cupcake towers (my fav!!) they look like cupcakes, but are actually cookies.

Brides who attended enjoyed courure fashions by Jeny Yoo which showcased both bridesmaid gowns in every color and their sleek classic wedding gowns.

For more fabulous photo's, be sure to check out my Examiner article.... HERE
